Mayday Coffee and Food

Richmond’s Bridge Road, my local stomping ground, is slowly but surely undergoing a transformation into a foodie destination. Under-performing retail factory outlets are gradually packing up and making way for new restaurants, bars and cafes.

The latest addition to the strip is Mayday Coffee and Food, a new venture by Axil Coffee Roasters. The site’s former occupant Clover and Rye was particularly uninspiring so I couldn’t help but get excited that Axil were moving in.

The eclectic all-day menu offers more than just your humble bacon and eggs – think S’mores waffles or cauliflower fritters. Even the classic smashed avo is given a Japanese twist with yuzu and nori salt.

Bob had the bacon chop with potato gratin, poached eggs and béarnaise – an interesting alternative to eggs benedict, I suppose.

Bacon chop

The pork was tender and the potato slice was a nice change from the usual toast. Our main observation was the size of it: Bob just managed it but there’s no way I could have eaten it on my own. Not really a complaint though!

I had the croque madame with raclette, ham hock and mustard bechamel.

Croque Madame

My, how satisfying this was. Soft, oozy cheese on the inside; crusty, browned cheese on the outside, creamy bechamel with tangy seeded mustard; chunks of smoky ham. If I didn’t care about my arteries I would have one of these every day.

The verdict

It’s early days but so far Mayday has been very promising. There are so many other things on the menu I want to try – I’ll definitely be back soon!
